Course Program

The seminar will bring to light two different experiences that, although belonging to two distant centuries, appear strongly intertwined. On the one hand, we will discuss the work of Ariosto, putting at the very centre the Orlando Furioso, but taking into account also other works of the poet; on the other hand, we will investigate times and dynamics of Calvino’s long-lasting interest, or rather genuine fascination, with Ariosto. We will thus take into consideration Calvino’s critical essays, radio readings of the poem and narrative works, from Il cavaliere inesistente to Castello dei destini incrociati. The students will thus confront with a great protagonist of the Renaissance, as well as with some crucial aspects of Calvino’s writing and of the literary culture of the 20th Century.
