Course Program

The course aims at introducing the students to some recent innovative approaches to the study of the language of Plato. The students will be asked to apply some of these methods to the text of Aeschylus. The topics discussed in the course include: linguistic characterisation of speakers; sociolinguistics; word order; pragmatic; conversation analysis; stylometry; the language of metaphors; narrative vs dialogue. The seminar discuss these linguistic and literary approaches with special reference to the Symposium, Phaedo, Phaedrus and Republic
